Green Juice for Detox and Health Maintenance

Create a Healthy Lifestyle

Most of us dread dieting because we’ll miss our favorite foods. However, the good news is that you can still have favorite foods; you just need to choose your healthiest favorites first and foremost. If you haven’t yet tried green juice, don’t make up your mind ahead of time. Give if it your best shot and chances are this could be a gamer changer for your health.

Green juice is a game changer for your health.

The most effective health and weight loss solutions for long term weight loss is to live it, not diet! The most sustainable strategy is to create positive patterns and habits that crowd out the ones that don’t serve your goals.

The replacement strategy is especially effective. Start simply, stabilize your progress, then repeat the process with one more positive change.

Substitute just one bad food
for one good one.

Don’t Diet… Live it!

Cravings and Indulging

When I’m craving things I shouldn’t have, (or mitigating a food hangover from having said foods) 😉, these are my go to strategies. These are super simple but work every time toward reducing cravings and improving how I feel, both physically and emotionally.

4 Balanced Body Remedies

  1. Exercise: if you exercise the moment you have a craving, even if for only a quick minute, your craving is more likely to go away and your craving is more likely to turn to something healthy. Exercise tends to take away the cravings, because it changes your physical state.
  2. Green juice: a healthy, nutrient rich green juice replaces sweet cravings and mutes your appetite. By feeding the body what it needs, cravings often disappear.
  3. Hydration: Lemon and/or lime water
  4. Fresh air and sunshine: vigorous walking, jogging, sprinting, biking or hiking in the great outdoors is an important component to a healthy body. Fresh air feeds our entire body system, and everything begins and ends in this life with breath.

If you can’t do all four of these, then do what you can, when you can, and you will feel better.

use green juice as a food, as a supplement and for detox.

Recover from Binges

  • Drink warm lemon water first thing in the morning
  • Exercise before eating
  • If you drink coffee, try butter coffee after morning exercise
  • Eat lean protein / no—or low—carbs for breakfast
  • Load up on healthy steamed veggies and salads for lunch and dinner
  • Dandelion detox tea

Between Christmas and mid-February, I consume more treats than any other time of the year because of the holidays followed by a series of family birthdays, which generally get stretched out over the weekend.

During these times, I allow myself to enjoy the extra treats without worrying too much about the subsequent few extra pounds. Of course, my ideal version of myself would ONLY consume healthy foods and treats, but I haven’t yet completely merged with her. 😊 However… thankfully, it’s a FAR cry from my bulimic 20’s!

But it’s imperative for my physical, emotional and mental wellbeing to keep the body healthy. So I balance out the treats with strong doses of very healthy foods, supplements and green juice, water, alkalinization, exercise and fresh air.

The One Thing Approach

Do not underestimate the power of this concept. It works if you do it. Start with one thing, stabilize that habit, then move on to the next one.

Substitute one bad thing you love
for one good thing you love.

A green juice cleanse is a good example of adding something good, to your daily routine. Imagine if your habit is to drink an afternoon soda or sugary coffee, and instead, you replace that with a delicious green smoothie. WOW! What a difference that will make to your body.

Okay… now if you’re someone who can’t yet label a green juice as “delicious”, don’t worry. There are ways to ease you into increasingly healthy smoothies that you’ll come to love.

If you replace one sugar drink per day
with one green juice,
you will quickly see positive benefits.

That’s just ONE change that can make a huge difference in your health, fitness and general sense of wellbeing. If you’re addicted to sugar, you’re not alone. You’ll want to get that addiction under control first and foremost. Our “aikido” approach might help with that.

What is a Green Juice Cleanse?

One of the most popular forms of detoxing is green juice cleansing. Juice cleanses flush toxins from your system powerful antioxidant, nutrient-dense, juices and water.

With green juice detox, natural vegetable juices—typically green veggies—some including green apples, are consumed exclusively for a period, as toxins are washed from the body.

Some people use a juice extractor; some using a masticator, others use blenders. We won’t get into the pros and cons of each in this article, other than to say that the cold-pressed masticating juicers are considered the very best juicers for preserving the most nutrition.

Years ago we used a Champion extracting juicer. Then we shifted to—and still have—a Jack Lalane’s Power Juicer. However, we rarely use it any more because we favor the Vitamix Blender.

We’re on our third Vitamix in 30 years and prefer it over the extracting juicers because blended food keeps more of the valuable phytonutrients and fruit and veggie fibers than extractors. Including the fibers adds nutrients and slows consumption and absorption rate, and there’s less waste.

A masticating juicer is on our wish list, but the Vitamix is so easy and we use it every day to blend my butter coffee, so for now we’re good with that.

If you have a juicer, blender or masticator that you like, please let us know, and we’ll definitely check into it.

But just what is green juice cleansing, what are its benefits, and are there right and wrong ways to do it?

Green Juice Benefits

Just like your car’s engine needs to be cleaned out periodically to improve performance, so do the inner workings of your body. However, while your car accumulates carbon and oil sludge, your body accumulates heavy metals, pesticides, and other environmental and internally produced toxins. Processed, sugar-laden foods and additives add another layer of toxicity and inflammation that compromise health and performance and increase the risk for diseases and degeneration.

However, unlike your car, you can’t just drop your body off at the mechanic for a tear-down and rebuild to get things healthy and working again. Instead, we need to be the mechanic, and use fasting, diet, and plenty of fluids to rid ourselves of accumulated waste.

You have one body. It’s up to you to maintain its optimal performance through optimal health. By doing this, you can get back to running on all cylinders. Vibrant health will enhance and improve every area of your body and life and help avoid things like acne, low energy, digestive disease, cancer and diabetes.1)

With a juice cleanse, a diet of pure, unrefined and preferably organic vegetable and fruit juices is adhered to for a period of time, usually lasting about a week, during which nearly all calories are derived from juice.

This—along with plenty of clean, pure water—helps rid the colon, liver, kidneys and fat cells of accumulated waste, which promotes full body rejuvenation.

Even those who adhere to a plant-based, organic diet will accumulate toxins in their system. This is an unfortunate fact of our modern world, and its many environmental pollutants in the air, water, and food supply—especially for those who consume a diet of processed foods.

However, a good cleanse doesn’t merely remove accumulated toxins from your body. A good green juice cleanse removes the bad, adds in the good and rejuvenates your entire system, which positively impacts every bodily system and organ, from head to toe.

And of course, an added and important benefit: Green juicing helps you lose weight!

Your body stores toxins in fat cells.

Green Juice Benefits Include

Better digestion — your digestive health naturally improves when you’re eating foods your body needs most. When your kidneys, lymph system, and liver are working their hardest to remove waste from your body, your liver is the one doing the brunt of the work.  Since your liver also plays a key role in digestion, a constant barrage of toxins to filter means it has less energy to devote to good digestion, which means you’re not getting full nutritional benefit from your diet.

Weight Loss — Your liver having to work extra hard can also be a double whammy for those trying to lose weight. You see, your body stores most of its toxins in fat cells, and when the liver is overloaded with the removal of waste from the body, it stores more fat—and likewise, more waste. Yuck! By relieving your liver of the extra burden of daily toxins, you can help get back to a healthy, functioning metabolism which works to eliminate your fat stores.

Clearer skin — When you first begin a cleanse, you may see the opposite of clear skin at first. Your skin is one of the eliminative organs your body uses to excrete what it doesn’t need. As your body detoxes through your pores, this can cause acne and even rashes.

However, this is usually a temporary condition (if not, ask your medical advisor), and once the initial expulsion of toxins is over, you will be left with clearer, more radiant skin.

Green juices are antioxidant, anti-inflammatory, and help regenerate skin collagen.

And, this is in addition to the astringent qualities of juices and fluids, which essentially work like a skin cleanser from the inside.

Identify food allergies — Many times, those with food allergies may not even realize they have them. For instance, symptoms of celiac disease can be bloating, gas and stomach cramps, which will often be thought of as poor digestion, or for reasons other than the consumption of wheat gluten.

However, if by removing potential allergens from your diet and noting any changes which occur from doing so, you can effectively pin-point the cause of your symptoms and know which foods to avoid in the future.

Since you are eliminating nearly everything other than fruits and vegetables from your diet during a green juice cleanse, it becomes easy to re-add foods one at a time, which will help you note any allergy symptoms which occur from a food.

Feel better — Environmental toxins and oxidations accumulating in the body can result in mental fog, depression, fatigue, poor memory and disorders such as ADHD.

The best thing you can do for your body besides living a healthy lifestyle is to do periodic detoxing and intermittent fasting.2) These are the best natural remedies you can employ to eliminate health impairing environmental toxins, that can include such things as heavy metals and formaldehyde.

By neutralizing your body’s pH balance, green juice can also help you avoid the main cause of inflammation, called acidosis. Reducing inflammation can reduce or eliminate a number of ailments, from mild aches and pains to serious disease, and can even help to slow down the aging process.

If you’re not sure what your pH is, it’s easy to test. We use these pH test strips available on Amazon and likely at your local pharmacy as well. Keeping acidity and alkalinity balanced is a key component of a healthy body, and green vegetables are the very best foods on earth for alkalinity.

Green juice helps ensure that you’re getting your recommended daily allowance and more. So whether you’re doing juice cleanses or supplementing for your health, green juice can be healthier than supplements, plus more effective and yet less expensive.

Best Juicers

If you can afford one, the best juicer to use is one which utilizes a low-speed, cold-pressed masticating juicer, which maximizes enzymes and phytonutrients in the finished product.

Okay, so are you ready to juice?! Let’s go!

Green Juice: Spinach Celery Bell with Ginger, Flax and Chia

This is one of our go-to green juice recipes.

Servings: 2

  • 3 cups Spinach
  • 4 stalks Celery
  • 1 medium green Apple
  • 1 large Green Bell Pepper (or two small)
  • 1 inch Ginger (or sub with two teabags soaked in 1/2c boiling water)
  • 1 TBS each of: Flax seed, Chia seed, Lime Juice, Lemon Juice
  • 3 cups 100% Coconut Water (approx)

Add celery, apple, bell pepper and a cup of coconut water, blend on highest speed your blender allows for about 1-2 minutes.  Next add spinach, flax seeds, chia seeds, lime & lemon juice and ginger.  Blend again on high until it’s smooth.  Then add rest of coconut milk and given it another quick whirl.

If you don’t have fresh ginger, you can steep two tea bags of organic ginger tea in 1/2 cup of boiling water and let it sit while you prep and blend the rest of the green juice. Then you can blend it at the end.  It’s going to taste a lot more mild than fresh ginger but it’s a good substitute.

Blending all the veggies with a minimal amount of coconut water helps it become super smooth.  But if you want to just throw it all in and blend it up in one go it all tastes the same.
