Yoga as a Path to Self

Yoga means union… an integration of soul and self, of higher and lower, of mind and emotions, body and soul. Yoga is integration and fusion, but beyond all of that, yoga is a deep stretching of the layers of the body, massage for the organs, centering, focusing and orienting to the breath of life.

Yoga is a union of soul and self.

Everyone has different reasons for doing yoga. Whatever your primary goals, most people agree that yoga helps with physical and emotional balance. Yoga is a getaway from a chattering mind, and a soothing salve to calm stress.

Start with yoga at home with free yoga videos you can do even in the comfort of your pajamas. We’ve researched and tried out quite a collection for you to keep you growing into a fun and regular yoga practice.

Stretching is critical for optimal health. Yoga is a means to deep stretching that’s beneficial to muscles, ligaments, tendons, joints and organs. Yoga can increase circulation and reduce inflammation.

However, as with any new physical program, make sure you listen to your body and stop and seek medical attention if you feel pain or discomfort.

Yoga builds poise and strength through calm… calm through strength. Yoga is a path to self.

The Convenience of Online Yoga

I really don’t like the idea of regularly visit yoga classes. The whole process of getting ready, leaving my home, going to Yoga and then having to come back fills me with tension – the exact opposite of what it should feel.

Online yoga classes give me the opportunity to experience all of the yoga benefits in the comfort of my own living room in the perfect time for me. Doing yoga at home isn’t only more convenient, but it’s also easier to practice at your own pace.

My favorite way to unwind and slow down for a restful sleep is to do yoga at night before bedtime.

I had fun picking out some favorite yoga websites that offer you great free content. So, grab your mat and enjoy!

Still want more Yoga at Home Options?

By Contributing Writer, Bronwen Bartlett

Yoga is about more than looking hot in yoga pants – it’s about gaining the maximum physical and mental benefit from an ages-old form of exercise and meditation, relieving built-up stress and tension, and learning what your body is truly capable of.

For decades now it’s been possible to join a class and learn the beauty and grace of yoga, but with lives that are seemingly just getting busier and busier, it’s hard to carve out the time to travel to a class and back.

Thankfully, for those of us who find it difficult to get to a class or would like to be at least somewhat experienced before joining one, there are hundreds of DVDs and online resources to help learn yoga. We’re taking a look at a few of them today to help you choose one that’s good for you.

A good yoga program needs three things:

  1. Gradual and natural progression
  2. Suits your needs and interests
  3. Accessible

First, it needs to take you through varying levels of expertise and allow you to build up to the more complex or challenging poses. Whether that means a single long program that explains how beginners should start and how pros can continue, or whether it means a series of three DVDs, this allows you to challenge yourself without harming yourself.

Second, it needs to suit your needs. Not everyone wants the same thing and there are yoga programs to fulfil your requirements – whether you need strength, flexibility, mindfulness or a good all-round program.

Third, it needs to be easily accessible – in other words, easy to buy or rent, quick to download or available online whenever you need it.

If you’re interested in doing yoga at home, here are some good resources for Beginners and Intermediate Levels. Taking time each week for the deep stretching yoga provides will optimize your performance, lubricate your joints and help protect you from pulls and strains. More than that, it calms the busy brain for deeper rest and primes it for the meditative state.

We favor doing yoga at night, the hour or so before bedtime, following an early light dinner or green juice.

The programs we’re looking at are a combination of free videos available on YouTube and DVDs you can download purchasable from Amazon.com.

1 – Rodney Yee’s Complete Yoga for Beginners

Rodney Yee is a highly experience yogi who has been offering various DVDs for several years now. This DVD includes four 20-minute programs focusing on Basics, Flexibility, Energy and Relaxation, plus a 10-minute Yoga Express practice and Rodney Yee’s complete beginner’s pose guide.

2 – Rodney Yee’s Power Yoga Collection

Once you’ve mastered the basics using Rodney Yee’s beginners program, it’s time to step it up with this three-in-one pack. This collection includes three of his best-known and loved programs:

  • Yoga Burn
  • Power Yoga
  • Yoga for Conditioning for Athletes

3 – Ali Kamenova Interval Yoga

If you have the basics down and are looking for a daily challenge, Interval Yoga by Ali Kamenova is a great YouTube channel which features several different strength-oriented workouts, varying in length from around 30 minutes to over an hour. We love how Ali incorporates the concept of The Hero’s Journey in these videos.

4 – Yoga House

Yoga Videos and Yoga Tutorials For Fitness and Strength by Sharmila – This YouTube channel offers workouts in various different yoga styles and is ideal for those who are already at least somewhat experienced and know the basics. |This is the perfect channel if you are looking to improve your yoga game.

5 – Yoga Stretch for Beginners and Beyond

Jessica Smith leads you through two gentle thirty-minute workouts in this balanced Yoga DVD. You get the AM Energizing Flow to get you up and ready to face the day and the PM Relaxing Flow to wind down and destress after the day is done. Anyone can enjoy this program.

6 – Yoga for Weight Loss for beginners and beyond

Divided into three sections, each with several shorter lessons, this program is customizable to suit you. Beginners may need a little practice before using this DVD, as some of the initial beginners’ poses can be quite challenging, but it is a great all-round program for yoga-based weight loss.

7 – Yoga Online

If you want a stronger mind-body focus, rather than just physical benefits, the this is the YouTube channel for you.

Six different instructors take you through various yoga techniques and workouts that are designed to ensure a mind-body connection for all-over health and wellness.

8 – Namaste Yoga – the Complete First Season

One of the greatest risks with getting a DVD yoga program is boredom – doing the same lesson over and over. Namaste Yoga gets past that hurdle by offering 13, 23-minute episodes of the popular TV series, each a unique workout in its own right.

These are available as DVDs or on Amazon Prime Video.

Even if you practice every day, it will be two weeks before you ever repeat a workout. Also available are the complete second and third seasons, each with 13 episodes, for a variety of sessions and no boredom from daily repeats.

9 – Beginner’s Yoga – Yoga with Adriene

We’re not beginners, but we—admittedly—haven’t done yoga in way too long. Yes… we too allow life to get in the way of self care more often than we should.

“If you go off into a far, far forest and get very quiet, you’ll come to understand that you’re connected with everything.”
~Alan Watts, British-American philosopher, 1915-1973

You’ll be Glad you Yoga

Here’s the thing about every positive change you make in your life: you will never regret every effort to improve your physical, emotional and mental health.

We think of yoga as deep stretching, something essential to the optimum functioning of the body. So if you haven’t done yoga much or for a long time, join us in making that positive change now.

Yoga helps your life flow into a more balanced state of being through greater integration of mind-body-soul.
