Super Berry Nut Mix

We make our own mixed nut blends rather than buying them because:

  • It’s cheaper to create a bulk batch of your own nut mix
  • No additives, oils, salts, sugars
  • We can make it with just the ingredients we want, and none of what we don’t want

We’re putting almost everything into this recipe and are using all the best nuts and super berries available.

We’ve carefully pre-shopped the best options we could find for you on Amazon to make it simple if you want to shop for these ingredients. If you do, we will receive pocket change from Amazon for that, which helps support this site at no cost to you. Or, you can search directly on Amazon or your favorite store yourself. It just may be hard to find everything in one place, which is why we’ve taken the time to gather it for you here.

So this is the no-holds-barred recipe, that includes just about every nut (not seeds) and every dried berry option. (Well almost… will try adding Brazil Nuts and Pistachios next time :-)). From there, you can cut back on anything… change any quantities to more of your favorites, and none of the ones you don’t like.

THIS MAKES A LARGE BATCH THAT CAN LAST FOR WEEKS. E.g., at 56 1/4 cup serving size, a family of four could enjoy one serving per day each for 14 days.

Pre-made nut mixes are not just for snacks though. The come in really handy for many things, such as adding to your own homemade granola, oatmeal, buckwheat, cookie batter, bread bake, such , oat clusters, yogurt, and cottage cheese for at-the-ready instant healthy snacks.

We keep a bag of homemade nut mix in the car or bag when traveling for a quick energy snack. This keeps us from getting hungry and succumbing to packaged snacks which typically have preservatives, additives, sugar, oil and often wheat and soy.

Recipe Notes

Directions:

We use the restaurant style Rubbermaid or Cambro Polycarbonate 8-Quart plastic containers with an air-tight lid to make, stir, shake and store our nut mixes. We have the Rubbermaid, but Cambro's Amazon page is easier to navigate for ordering the sizes you want and their prices are a little cheaper than Rubbermaids.

Sometimes they are listed without the lids, so be sure to order the lid as well for airtight fresh storage. Here's the link for Rubbermaid lid, and here's the one for Cambro. (I don't know if they use the same exact size lid, but it appears as if Cambro's corners are a little more rounded).

These are great containers for storing soups and other leftovers as well. As a busy family of four, we like to make big batches at a time, like a gallon of healthy soup, cooked beans, etc. and then eat from that over the week. It's an awesome family thing to do on a Sunday afternoon/evening, by the way: make up a few recipes at a time, cooking together, then you'll enjoy a fridge full of delicious and nutrition home cooked meals throughout the week. Same thing with snacks... we keep a "cookie jar" on our counter with raw nuts and nut mix and a fruit bowl, instead of sugary treats. And, on the weekends, we might have some of our favorite healthy baked treats.

Back to this recipe:

We used to add sunflower and pumpkin seeds to this mixture, however the smaller seeds always sift to the bottom, so we now make our seed mixes and nut mixes separately, however, you can always make them separately but add them together in a serving for a super deluxe nut mix treat.

NOTE 1: Fruit & Nuts Ratio: Our dried fruit-to-nut ratio used to be ~2-1, nuts to fruit. Now we typically reduce this to 3-1, nuts to fruit to reduce the sugar content. In this recipe, since the goji berries are often as tart as they are sweet, and because we're using unsweetened blueberries, we've increased the fruit-to-nut ratio here.

NOTE 2: There are so many more nutritious berry options these days, with lower sugar and higher nutrition content, such as Goji BerriesGolden Berries, and Mulberries.

Also, while most raisins are sun-dried, most cranberries and blueberries are cured with sugar and usually oiled with sunflower oil to keep them from sticking together, so whenever possible, use the sun-dried or freeze dried options. Dried fruits are already high in sugar content, so you don't want to make that worse.

NOTE 3: This recipe is super flexible.  You can use any of your favorite dried fruits and nuts, in place or in addition to these.

Our Quick Nut Mix Recipe is just
2 cups Pecans
2 cups Walnuts
2 cups Cashews
1-2 cup of dried fruit
